Report from Mardi Gras

8 Jan

On January 3rd my family celebrated Mardi Gras. We know it’s a few months early, but you can’t argue with The Sampler. (To select the theme for each of our parties, we randomly draw from a Whitman’s Sampler chocolate box. The chocolate is long gone, but the fun lives on via about 50 slips of paper, each with a theme dreamed up by someone in my family.)

I highly recommend a Mardi Gras themed party – any time of year! The atmosphere is festive, the food is flavorful and delicious, and the music is fantastic.

Here’s what we ate:

  • Creole Okra
  • Cajun Corn and Bacon Maque Choux
  • Black Eyed Peas, Rice, and Andouille Sausage
  • Salmon with Brown Sugar Bourbon Glaze
  • Jambalaya with Sausage, Chicken, and Shrimp
  • Gateau de Sirop
  • Bananas Foster
  • Hurricanes

Is your mouth watering yet?

In advance of the party, my sister and I did some quick dollar store shopping for decorations. Super easy – purple, green, and gold (yellow) crepe paper, several $1 mardi gras masks, and some sparkly star banners. We loaded up the iPod with a New Orleans jazz playlist that had everyone humming along. We also asked everyone to bring whatever art supplies they had around the house for our Mardi Gras Shoebox Float Parade. My sister and I weren’t sure we’d have enough supplies, but everyone came through! We had construction paper, felt, glitter glue, stickers, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, buttons, ribbons, feathers, and more. Check out the results of our efforts:
