Oompa Loompas and Bacon Flavored Chocolate: Valentine’s Day Party Recap

15 Feb

On Friday my roommate and I hosted a pre-Valentine’s Day chocolate-themed dinner party. Unfortunately, we forgot to take pictures again (it takes you out of the moment, don’t you think?), and I don’t have recipes to point to because we mostly made up the menu ourselves.

Here are some things we did to make it fun and chocolate-y:

  • The invitations were Willy Wonka-style Golden Tickets. Note: If you do this, be careful to specify whether it’s an actual Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed party. I had one friend ask if she should adapt her Lollipop Guild Halloween costume and arrive as an Oompa Loompa. I was tempted to tell her yes, but decided to be a good friend and let her know that costumes were not expected.
  • We did the Moo postcard thing again for party favors, this time with different pictures of chocolate in all forms (candies, hot chocolate, cacao beans, etc.) on the front and a spiced hot chocolate recipe on the back.
  • We came up with a delicious menu: assorted crackers and cheeses as an appetizer (including a white chocolate-laced ricotta); a Rainbow Salad (green avocado! orange mango! purple cabbage!) with a white chocolate vinaigrette; chicken and vegetable taquitos with dark chocolate mole sauce; and seared scallops drizzled in a white chocolate sauce. For dessert, we had dark chocolate fondue with strawberries and bananas; and miniature, vaguely heart-shaped red velvet cupcakes with vanilla cream cheese frosting.
  • We had a chocolate tasting! We found five amazing chocolate bars (including blueberry and lavender; fig, date, and fennel; crystallized ginger; chiles; and bacon), broke them into very small pieces and had everyone guess the flavors. I heart games.
  • We had a signature cocktail. White hot chocolate with rum and cinnamon. Yum.
  • It might seem like a lot of chocolate, so the trick was to serve very small portions of everything.
  • We invited awesome people. Honestly, this was the best part. We invited a small number of friends, many of whom had never met, but all of whom are interesting and funny. Thanks to everyone who came and shared in the good time!

I also want to point out that I have the best roommate ever because she just came in my room to give me some homemade chai tea. Thanks, Liza!

(Crap. I just spilled some on my pants.)
