By Request: Liza’s Chai Tea Recipe

16 Feb

My roommate, Liza, is an excellent chai tea maker. This January she sent out homemade chai tea kits for a surprise New Year’s gift for some of her friends and family. She put the necessary spices in a small plastic bag and attached a card with the instructions.

Liza’s words:

Chai Tea
With chai tea, its not an exact science. Everything is to taste so you can use more or less of any ingredient as you please.

2 cups water
Fresh chopped ginger
5 – 10 crushed cardamom pods (add ground cardamom with pods for more flavor)
5 – 10 crushed cloves (add ground cloves for more flavor)
1 bay leaf
Ground pepper
Small handful fennel
Half cinnamon stick
1 – 2 Tetley tea bags (or any other black tea that appears red in color when brewed, ie. Red Rose)
1/2 cup – 1 cup half & half, cream, or other milk (use less for heavier milk)
Honey or sugar

Bring water to boil
Add spices
Add teabags and lower heat
Stir and simmer approximately 5 – 10 minutes
Add half & half
Add sugar or honey to taste
Simmer until hot
Strain with strainer or coffee filter
Toast to all this beautiful life…

I can attest to the deliciousness of this particular recipe. 🙂
